The Biodiversity Bank

Investing in biodiversity data

The global business sector is increasingly aware of its dependence on biodiversity and the associated financial risks. All nature-positive solutions require a strong foundation: biodiversity data. Without robust, accessible data businesses cannot assess their ecological impacts or dependencies. Despite growing awareness of the “biodiversity data gap” science-backed, scalable mechanisms to incentivise private sector investment in data collection and mobilisation are still lacking.

There is a strong Business Case for Investing in Biodiversity Data

The Biodiversity Bank uses an innovative financing model that:

  • Connects private sector investment to biodiversity data mobilisation with a biodiversity data impact certification

  • Invests in importamt biodiversity data generated from under-represented sources as well as with new technologies

  • Funds biodiversity metadata standard development to ensure data are Findable Accessible Interoperable & Reusable and fully available on GBIF

Impact Investing

We can have a major impact on the future of biodiversity technology by producing high-quality data that feeds into AI algorithms. Financing the collection and mobilisation of primary biodiversity data can generate societal-level benefits, because even small improvements to AI models, when applied across all future iterations, translate into an enormous cumulative impact.

The diagram suggests a process of data flow, facilitation, and sharing aimed at promoting fair access and utilization of biodiversity information.
